From a Passion for Collecting Ceramics to a Business Creating Contemporary Lighting

Mid-Century Ceramics and New Lampshades – A Perfect Match for Modern Table and Floor Lamps

Roomlight Studio is a project created by Berlin-based entrepreneur Christina Eulgem. After more than 20 years as the owner and managing director of a public relations agency, she felt it was time for a new creative chapter in 2024.

For many years, she had been passionate about vintage furniture, Mid-Century design, ceramics, and distinctive lighting objects. What began as a private interest in collecting gradually evolved into a business idea: transforming vintage lamps, ceramic vases, and West German Pottery pieces into unique table lamps and decorative accent lights through thoughtful upcycling.

Today, Roomlight Studio creates handcrafted vintage table lamps, cordless accent lamps, restored designer lighting, and bespoke lampshades for people who appreciate characterful one-of-a-kind pieces over mass-produced products.

Each lamp combines the craftsmanship and design heritage of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s with contemporary materials, carefully selected textiles, and modern lighting technology. The result is a collection of distinctive lighting objects that bring personality, warmth, and individuality into modern interiors.

Eight months lamp laboratory

The first prototype was followed by many months of intensive research and development. Flea markets, estate sales, private collections, garage sales, and warehouse inventories were carefully explored in search of suitable ceramic pieces. At the same time, the first lampshades were created, along with new conversion concepts and technical solutions for cordless table lamps.

Roomlight Studio developed a particular interest in the ceramic production of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Manufacturers such as Scheurich, Bay Keramik, Jasba, Dümler & Breiden, Steuler, and Marei shaped this era and today enjoy cult status among collectors around the world. These ceramics, widely known under the term West German Pottery, have become a key focus of the collection.

After eight months of development, the first market-ready lamps were completed. Today, the collection includes a diverse range of vintage vases and lamp bases from which new one-of-a-kind lighting pieces are regularly created.

Handcrafted Lampshades and Unique Lighting Objects

An essential part of the concept is the lampshade itself. Every lampshade is handcrafted and individually designed to complement the character and proportions of its lamp base.

Materials include Japanese cotton fabrics, Ikat textiles, designer fabrics, handmade papers, and other translucent materials. The goal is not simply to create a lamp, but a lighting object with a strong visual presence even when switched off.

Exhibitions and Pop-Up Stores

The first lamps were presented as accent lights at exhibitions and pop-up stores in Berlin. One particularly revealing experience was an exhibition in Berlin's Ackerstraße. It quickly became apparent that lighting objects possess a unique attraction once dusk begins to fall.

Many visitors initially entered the space because they were drawn in by the illuminated shop window display and only afterwards began to engage more closely with the individual lamps. This experience confirmed the central idea behind Roomlight Studio: a well-designed accent lamp does more than illuminate a room—it becomes an integral part of the interior itself.

Between Design History and Contemporary Living

Roomlight Studio brings together Mid-Century design, West German Pottery, vintage ceramics, handcrafted lampshades, and modern lighting technology to create distinctive contemporary lighting pieces. Many lamps are made from original ceramic objects dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Others are reimagined as cordless table lamps, offering the flexibility to be used throughout the home, on balconies, or on terraces.

Each lamp is handcrafted in Berlin and remains a true one-of-a-kind piece.
