Our Concept - Vase Lamps and Accent Lights Made from Vintage Ceramics

Signature Lamps for Individual Home Tastes

Vase Lamps with Character

Roomlight Studio in Berlin develops individual vase lamps, accent lamps, and handmade lampshades for people seeking unique home objects. Each lamp is created from the combination of extraordinary ceramics, high-quality fabrics, and contemporary lighting technology.

Many of my lamps are based on vintage vases from the 1950s to 1970s. Selected ceramics are transformed into characterful side lamps and table lamps, combining design history with modern living.

On Trend: Individual Home Objects Instead of Mass-Produced Goods

Individual lamps are the home trend of the coming years. After flower vases, gallery walls, and landscapes of sofa cushions, the focus is on multiple lighting.

Signature lamps from Roomlight Studio not only add luminous accents to the interior but also, and more importantly, highlight themselves. The more striking, the better.

Mid Century Design Reinterpreted

Many lamp bases originate from the Mid Century design era. Vases from the 1960s and 1970s, in particular, offer a wide variety of shapes, glazes, and surfaces.

Whether West German Pottery, studio ceramics, or international ceramics – each object is carefully selected and translated into the present. Custom-made shades create timeless accent lamps that fit into both modern and classic interiors.

The Hidden Treasure in German Basements

While vintage ceramics have been valued as design objects in countries like Japan, the USA, or Australia for many years, numerous extraordinary pieces still slumber in attics, basements, and display cabinets in Germany.

Many of these vases were once bought as utilitarian objects and later forgotten. Today, they tell a story of a time when ceramics were experimental, bold, and artfully designed. Roomlight Studio gives these objects a new purpose – as individual vase lamps with contemporary lighting effects.

Your Own Vase as a Lamp

Do you own a special vase passed down through your family, or have you discovered an extraordinary piece at a flea market?

I would be happy to transform your own vase into an individual table lamp or side lamp. Together, we will develop a lamp that perfectly matches your living style. The shape, size, and fabric of the lampshade can be individually adjusted. This creates personal mementos with a new function and a unique story of their own.

Gentle Construction Without Drilling

Vintage objects deserve respectful treatment. That's why Roomlight Studio does not drill holes in the ceramics.

Instead, a specially developed plug-in system is used. The lamp technology is integrated through the existing opening of the vase. The original condition is preserved, and the collector's value of the ceramic is not affected. All modifications can be reversed if necessary.

Light as a Design Element

The focus of my work is not just the shape of the lamp, but also the effect of the light. That's why I only use translucent fabrics, papers, and textiles for my lampshades.

Desired is light emission through the material itself. The light should not only exit upwards and downwards but also penetrate the shade, making its structure, patterns, and colors visible. This creates lively light objects with a warm, atmospheric lighting effect.

Depending on the material, different effects are created – from softly diffused light patterns to distinctive patterns and shadow drawings. The lampshade itself thus becomes a design element in the room.

Handmade Lampshades

Each lampshade is handcrafted in my Berlin workshop. Selected fabrics from Europe and Japan, handmade papers, and special textiles with unusual patterns and textures are used.

The lampshades are deliberately not intended as interchangeable accessories but as an important part of the overall room staging. Material, pattern, and light effect are precisely matched to the respective vase.

Cordless Lamps for Balcony, Terrace, and Living Room

Many models are also available as cordless battery lamps. The rechargeable LED light sources are charged via USB-C, can be controlled by a remote control, and offer a lighting duration of up to twelve hours.

This makes the lamps suitable not only as accent lamps in the living room but also for balconies, terraces, conservatories, or sheltered outdoor areas. Especially there, the warm light colors and the translucent shade materials create particularly atmospheric light islands.

Sustainable Lamp Production Through Upcycling

Those who avoid fast fashion and also steer clear of fast furniture prefer to buy high-quality and vintage furniture and home accessories. The ceramic designs of studio ceramics from the 60s and 70s are currently being rediscovered and newly produced by well-known furniture manufacturers such as HK Living from the Netherlands, copying the iconic look and feel and re-introducing them to the market. We believe that using originals is much more valuable, beautiful, and also more sustainable.

Each lamp is unique: Our lamp bases were produced in renowned ceramic factories of the 60s / 70s. Names like Scheurich, Steuler, Jasba, Dümler & Breiden, or Carstens Tönnieshof are still known today, although most of the operations closed down from the 80s onwards. In the 60s and 70s, some designers made a name for themselves with their special shapes and decors - such as Cari Zalloni, who designed for WMF, Steuler, Fohr or Goebel, among others, or Bodo Mans primarily for Bay Keramik. Especially with Fat-Lava vases and lamps, glazes and colors always turn out differently, as the firing result could vary from object to object. No two vases are exactly alike.

Each lamp gets its own look. The plug-in solutions vary depending on the vase shape. The construction with the base plate and socket, as well as the new shade, also determine the look of the finished lamp.

Pairing: We reunite lamps of a series

A signature lamp acts as an illuminated object in the room. Two signature lamps don't just act, they define the room.

Because a classic duo always looks more high-quality and makes the look of Mid Century design and contemporary shade stand out better, we like to look for the twin of our finds. We don't always succeed, but very often: family reunification is part of our concept. Sometimes, even extended families emerge from it.

Frequent Questions about Our Vase Lamps and Lampshades

What is a vase lamp?

A vase lamp is a table or side lamp whose base is made from a vase. At Roomlight Studio, many vase lamps are created from selected vintage ceramics from the 1950s to 1970s. Each lamp is unique and is combined with a custom-made lampshade.

Can I have my own vase converted into a lamp?

Yes. If you own a special vase passed down through your family or a favorite piece from a flea market, it can be converted into an individual lamp. Together, we will develop a suitable lampshade and a lighting concept that matches your living style.

Will my vase be damaged during the conversion?

No. For vintage vases, no drilling is done. The lamp technology is integrated using a specially developed plug-in system. This ensures that the ceramic remains undamaged and the collector's value of the vase is preserved.

Can the modifications be reversed?

Yes. Most modifications are reversible. The vase remains in its original condition and can be used as a vase again if desired.

Are the lampshades handmade?

Yes. Each lampshade is handcrafted in my Berlin workshop. Selected fabrics, design textiles, Japanese cotton fabrics, handmade papers, and other special materials are used.

Can I customize my lamp?

Yes. Many lamps are created in close consultation with customers. The vase, lampshade, fabric, size, and technical specifications can be individually chosen.

Whether it's vintage ceramic, a modern vase, Japanese fabric, handmade paper, or a cordless version – together, we will develop a lamp that suits your living style and room concept.

Are the lamps also available in pairs as bedside lamps?

Yes. Many customers are looking for matching lamp pairs for bedrooms, sideboards, or symmetrical room concepts.

If two identical vases are already available, two matching lamps can easily be made from them. If only a single lamp is initially available, I will gladly look for a second matching vase. Often, identical models from the same manufacturer in the same size and shape can be sourced.

Subsequently, the second lamp is manufactured to match the first, creating a harmonious pair of lamps.

Please use the contact form for this. After checking availability, I will get back to you with a specific timeframe in which the second lamp can be realized.

What does it cost to have my own vase converted into a lamp?

The costs depend on the size, shape, and condition of the vase, as well as the desired features.

Since each lamp is created individually, I will gladly provide a non-binding offer. Simply use the contact form and ideally send some photos of the vase.

Which vases are suitable for conversion into a lamp?

Generally, many ceramic, porcelain, and glass vases are suitable for conversion into a lamp.

Particularly popular are vintage vases from the 1950s to 1970s, West German Pottery, studio ceramics, and special unique pieces from family collections.

If you are unsure, simply send a photo of your vase via the contact form. I will gladly check whether a conversion is sensible and technically feasible.

Can I order a custom-made lampshade?

Yes. Many lampshades are custom-made individually.

The diameter, height, shape, and covering material can be adapted to the respective lamp or existing room. This creates individual solutions for table lamps, accent lamps, floor lamps, or pendant lights.

Do you reupholster old lampshades?

Yes. Reupholstering existing lampshades is also part of Roomlight Studio's offerings.

Especially high-quality vintage lampshades or shades with sentimental value can be given a contemporary design with a new fabric cover.

Currently, I reupholster cylindrical and tapered shades. Empire shades and other complex special shapes cannot be processed at this time.

If you would like to have a lampshade reupholstered, please send some photos and the dimensions of the shade via the contact form. I will then check the feasibility and advise you on suitable fabrics and materials.

Are the cordless lamps suitable for outdoor use?

The cordless lamps can be easily used on balconies, terraces, or in conservatories. The LED light source used is suitable for outdoor operation. However, the lamps should not be exposed to rain or moisture permanently.

How long does a cordless lamp shine?

Depending on the brightness setting, the illumination time is up to twelve hours. The LED light source is conveniently charged via USB-C.

Can the light source be replaced?

Yes. The rechargeable LED light source can be replaced at any time and can be repurchased for approximately 12 euros.

Are the lamps suitable as accent lamps?

Yes. Many models are used as accent lamps on sideboards, shelves, windowsills, or small tables. Their compact size makes them particularly suitable as decorative accent lighting.

What is an accent lamp?

An accent lamp serves less for direct task lighting and more for staging a room. It creates atmosphere, sets decorative highlights, and draws attention to certain areas or pieces of furniture.

Does Roomlight Studio also offer ceiling lamps?

In addition to vase lamps and table lamps, modular lamp systems are increasingly being created. These can be used as pendant lights, ceiling lamps, or table lamps depending on the concept.

Are the lamps manufactured in Berlin?

Yes. The lampshades and luminaires are handcrafted or assembled in my Berlin workshop. Each object is created with meticulous craftsmanship and individually assembled.
